Bartky through Foucault talks about bodies in desks the same way as bodies as soldiers. It brings me back to my time in drum corps. When I went back to school, I sat up so straight for so long, because it seemed like the more natural thing to do. I have never had more of an awareness of my body than in my time then. 

The perception of self-surveillance is something I was aware of, but not explicitly in my mind with Foucault. I will keep those linked. "prisons resemble factories, schools, barracks, hospitals, which all resemble prisons"

"Whatever its ultimate effect, discipline can provide the individual upon whom it is imposed with a sense of mastery as well as a secure sense of identity.... thus feminism threatens women with a certain de-skilling, something people normally resist: beyond this, it calls into question that aspect of personal identity that is tied to the development of a sense of competence."
