George Eliot, Middlemarch

1871

To start, this is the best book I’ve ever read. It might be the best book ever written, too. There are about 300 pages in the center of this book that are excruciatingly boring, and it’s still the best book ever written.

If you didn’t know, George Eliot is actually a lady, her real name was Mary Ann Evans. The book is about women and men and failed ambition. If you only have 30 minutes, just read the prelude, it basically sums up the entire plot. But if you have six months, and nothing to do, I’d go for the whole book. I think because the middle part of the book is so boring and so slow, the ending is just that much more satisfying. I literally shed a single tear as I closed the last page of this book.
