Hardy, Far from the Madding Crowd

1874

I watched the movie in theaters in Berkeley when it came out. It starred Carrie Mulligan. I read the book last summer in Edinburgh. It was a fantastic novel, and really cemented my love of English pastoral novels. I just really like it when people talk about nature.

In the movie, I didn’t really buy that Carrie Mulligan would want to end up with Mr. Oak, even though he was very handsome. She seemed too independent and in her own world. In the book, I got it, even though the plot was basically unchanged.
