La Rochefoucauld, Maximes

1665

François de La Rochefoucauld was a writer from 15th Century France. He was wealthy and attended the salons of the rich in France. The story goes that the salons were loud, raucous affairs and that to have your voice heard, you had to speak succinctly and cleverly. His maxims were short, bite-sized texts (with a bite) that talked about all aspects of life from love, loyalty, fame, youth.

Reading La Rochefoucauld, one thing became apparent. He would have loved Twitter. I created a Twitter Bot that tweets his Maxims daily, only omitting those that exceeded the 280 character maximum (of which there were very few). My favorite maxim: "Most young people think they are natural when they are only boorish and rude."
