Thorsson, The Saga of Grettir the Strong

1400

My dad has a huge book of all the Icelandic Sagas at home, and then a book version of this saga. I started with the small boom. Grettir's Saga details the life of Grettir Asmundarson, an Icelandic Outlaw whose father had been a Viking raider. Grettir is a big strong dude, almost a wild beast, and the story is about his life, and the colonization of Iceland over hundreds of years.

The land started wild and lonely but became orderly and republican and no longer a suitable habitat for Grettir. It’s a very interesting commentary about society, the wildness and brutality of nature and what gets repressed when forming societies. Very interesting stuff for 1400 AD.
