Voltaire, Candide

1759

As a warning to a reader, this book has an outrageous number of rapes in it. I didn’t know anything about Candide, and figured it was going to be another super dry philosophy book about the rights of men, or about science or something, because that’s the time period this book fits into

When you think Voltaire, you think it’s going to be super dull. Candide is actually a satire. Voltaire is trying to contest the optimistic notion that we live in the “best of all possible worlds”. This book was highly recommended to me by someone who knows I like to read old stuff, and I have to say….
